ADL TO RUSSIANS: "END FOCUS ON JEWISH CONSPIRACY IN INVESTIGATION OF CZAR
NICHOLAS II'S DEATH"
New York, NY, December 15, 1997 The Anti-Defamation League, outraged
that the Russian government's investigation into the death of Czar Nicholas II
is focusing on allegations of a Jewish conspiracy, called for the immediate
removal of the matter from the investigation and for a formal apology to the
Russian Jewish community.
In a letter to Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, Howard P.
Berkowitz, ADL National Chairman, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director,
said, "the use of such outrageous myths and age-old anti-Semitic stereotypes by
the Russian government is utterly appalling. It serves to both legitimize and
promote these dangerous and false perceptions of Jews and Judaism in Russian."
They asserted that the government's use of such accusations in its investigation
further promulgates and wrongly validates long-discredited, vicious and bigoted
images of Jews.
"We strongly urge the Government of the Russian Federation to
immediately remove this matter from its investigation into the Czar's death and
issue a formal apology to the Russian Jewish community," stated Mr. Berkowitz
and Mr. Foxman.
In a similar letter to His Holiness Aleksy II, head of the Russian
Orthodox Church, the ADL leaders expressed concern that it was the Church who
was promoting this focus of the investigation.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading
organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that
counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

Letter to Bolshevik
To the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of
the All-Union Communist Party (Bolshevik)
We appeal to you, asking you to pay a minimum of attention
to our request.
We are prisoners who are returning from the Solovetsky
concentration camp because of our poor health. We went there
full of energy and good health, and now we are returning as
invalids, broken and crippled emotionally and physically. We are
asking you to draw your attention to the arbitrary use of power
and the violence that reign at the Solovetsky concentration camp
in Kemi and in all sections of the concentration camp. It is
difficult for a human being even to imagine such terror, tyranny,
violence, and lawlessness. When we went there, we could not
conceive of such a horror, and now we, crippled ourselves,
together with several thousands who are still there, appeal to
the ruling center of the Soviet state to curb the terror that
reigns there. As though it weren't enough that the Unified State
Political Directorate [OGPU] without oversight and due process
sends workers and peasants there who are by and large innocent
(we are not talking about criminals who deserve to be punished),
the former tsarist penal servitude system in comparison to
Solovky had 99% more humanity, fairness, and legality. [...]
People die like flies, i.e., they die a slow and painful
death; we repeat that all this torment and suffering is placed
only on the shoulders of the proletariat without money, i.e., on
workers who, we repeat, were unfortunate to find themselves in
the period of hunger and destruction accompanying the events of
the October Revolution, and who committed crimes only to save
themselves and their families from death by starvation; they have
already borne the punishment for these crimes, and the vast
majority of them subsequently chose the path of honest labor.
Now because of their past, for whose crime they have already
paid, they are fired from their jobs. Yet, the main thing is
that the entire weight of this scandalous abuse of power, brute
violence, and lawlessness that reign at Solovky and other
sections of the OGPU concentration camp is placed on the
shoulders of workers and peasants; others, such as
counterrevolutionaries, profiteers and so on, have full wallets
and have set themselves up and live in clover in the Soviet
State, while next to them, in the literal meaning of the word,
the penniless proletariat dies from hunger, cold, and back-
breaking 14-16 hour days under the tyranny and lawlessness of
inmates who are the agents and collaborators of the State
Political Directorate [GPU].
If you complain or write anything ("Heaven forbid"), they
will frame you for an attempted escape or for something else, and
they will shoot you like a dog. They line us up naked and
barefoot at 22 degrees below zero and keep us outside for up to
an hour. It is difficult to describe all the chaos and terror
that is going on in Kemi, Solovky, and the other sections of the
concentrations camp. All annual inspections uncover a lot of
abuses. But what they discover in comparison to what actually
exists is only a part of the horror and abuse of power, which the
inspection accidently uncovers. (One example is the following
fact, one of a thousand, which is registered in GPU and for which
the guilty have been punished: THEY FORCED THE INMATES TO EAT
THEIR OWN FECES. "Comrades," if we dare to use this phrase,
verify that this is a fact from reality, about which, we repeat,
OGPU has the official evidence, and judge for yourself the full
extent of effrontery and humiliation in the supervision by those
who want to make a career for themselves. [...]
We are sure and we hope that in the All-Union Communist
Party there are people, as we have been told, who are humane and
sympathetic; it is possible, that you might think that it is our
imagination, but we swear to you all, by everything that is
sacred to us, that this is only one small part of the nightmarish
truth, because it makes no sense to make this up. We repeat, and
will repeat 100 times, that yes, indeed there are some guilty
people, but the majority suffer innocently, as is described
above. The word law, according to the law of the GPU
concentration camps, does not exist; what does exist is only the
autocratic power of petty tyrants, i.e., collaborators, serving
time, who have power over life and death. Everything described
above is the truth and we, ourselves, who are close to the grave
after 3 years in Solovky and Kemi and other sections, are asking
you to improve the pathetic, tortured existence of those who are
there who languish under the yoke of the OGPU's tyranny,
violence, and complete lawlessness....

This article on Karl Marx, which now appears in a separate printing,
was written in 1913 (as far as I can remember) for the Granat
Encyclopaedia. A fairly detailed bibliography of literature on Marx,
mostly foreign, was appended to the article. This has been omitted in
the present edition. The editor of the Encyclopaedia, for their part,
have, for censorship reasons, deleted the end of the article on Marx,
namely, the section dealing with his revolutionary tactics.
Unfortunately, I am unable to reproduce that end, because the draft
has remained among my papers somewhere in Krakow or in Switzerland. I
only remember that in the concluding part of the article I quoted,
among other things, the passage from Marx's letter to Engels of April
16, 1856, in which he wrote:
"The whole thing in Germany will depend on the possibility of
backing the proletarian revolution by some second edition of the
Peasant War. Then the affair will be splendid."
That is what our Mensheviks[2], who have now sunk to utter betrayal of
socialism and to desertion to the bourgeoisie, have failed to
understand since 1905.

Karl Marx, the son of Hirschel and Henrietta Marx, was born in Trier,
Germany, in 1818. Hirschel Marx was a lawyer and to escape anti-Semitism decided
to abandon his Jewish faith when Karl was a child. Although the majority of
people living in Trier were Catholics, Marx decided to become a Protestant. He
also changed his name from Hirschel to Heinrich. <<A lot of Jews did as Karl
Marx did. They may have changed to being a Protestant or a Catholic but theu
were still Jews in the eyes of the Nazis. Tavish>>
In January 1846 Marx set up a Communist Correspondence Committee. The
plan was to try and link together socialist leaders living in different parts of
Europe. Influenced by Marx's ideas, socialists in England held a conference in
London where they formed a new organization called the Communist League. Marx
formed a branch in Brussels and in December 1847 attended a meeting of the
Communist League' Central Committee in London. At the meeting it was decided
that the aims of the organization was "the overthrow of the bourgeoisie, the
domination of the proletariat, the abolition of the old bourgeois society based
on class antagonisms, and the establishment of a new society without classes and
without private property".
When Marx returned to Brussels had concentrated on writing The Communist
Manifesto. Based on a first draft produced by Friedrich Engels called the
Principles of Communism, Marx finished the 12,000 word pamphlet in six weeks.
Unlike most of Marx's work, it was an accessible account of communist ideology.
Written for a mass audience, The Communist Manifesto summarized the forthcoming
revolution and the nature of the communist society that would be established by
the proletariat. The Communist Manifesto was published in February, 1848.

Communists openly declare that their ends can be attained only by the forcible
overthrow of all existing social conditions. Let the ruling classes tremble at a
Communistic revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains.

Here is Communist Paul Kneisel advocating a communist uprising:
