wow. i just switched on the local television news and it appears
that i'm quite the oddity. most of greater cleveland is still
without electricity and they are expecting it to be out for 12-36
hours. some communities have already run out of water (no power for
treatment facilities) and police in the city of cleveland are
enforcing a curfew. the talking heads on the local news are looking
disheveled and sweaty from lack of air conditioning.
bizarre stuff. i love it. |

without power, most gas stations are unable to operate, but the
talking heads are telling us about a gas station in a cleveland
suburb that has power and is selling fuel. they are also telling us
that fistfights have broken out among patrons at this gas station
and the police are now on the scene. there is a line of cars
stretching a half mile down the street from this gas station, all
waiting to get fuel. some of them are fighting with each other.
americans. what spineless pussies. take away their electricity and
ability to spend money for six hours and we see what they're made
of. watch out world. i hope you're taking notes. |

I hear you.
I'm in California. When PG&E built the nuclear power plant at Diablo
Canyon, the protesters were at full tilt. I think they are still
protesting. My father used to give tours of the plant before it went
on-line. I'd go with him sometimes, back in the late 70's, early 80's.
What always amazed me was all those protesting yuppies, who drove to the
site in new expensive gas hog vehicles. You knew they used their toaster or
microwave that morning for breakfast. Their hair styles indicated blow
dryers and curling irons were owned and used. Of course they were always
clean, and well dressed, which required some hot water, and power for the
machines, irons. You know they went home to a house that was fully
electric, a bunch of kids playing video games or watching TV. Of course
they all had air conditioning, swimming pools, hot tubs. You knew these
people consumed electricity all day long - except when they were standing in
front of the construction materials delivery trains, protesting.
The irony of it used to amuse me.
Then, we have the black-outs in 2001. Same people, now screaming for
cheaper power, "I'm too hot!". Well, they got it all right. They got it
for less than what it cost to produce. And now, all the power companies are
bankrupt, and the California economy is in shambles. But damn, guess what?
Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant is still on-line, pumping out juice, and
those folks are still grumbling about it, as they watch the lights go out in
New York, on their electric TV screens.
Yep, I think it's kind of funny. |

Cat,
The electricity problem in California dates back to exactly the time and
incidents you mention.
Under Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown, 1974-1982 a ban on the expansion of nuclear
plants was put into place.
As the state grew at its highest rate, the capacity for electricity was kept
stagnant.
It was done due to the pressure from environmental groups.
The price/importation issues were just the outcome of people profiting from
a now limited supply.

Yes, I'm very well aware of the entire situation. My father was a career
PG&E executive. I know the inside and out of the "power structure" in CA,
from inside the Kerkoff underground power plant, the on-line Diablo Canyon
plant, the geo thermal plants, as well as the politics, and the Public
Utility Commission's screw ups. I watched them build the San Luis
Reservoir, and the one up in Oroville on the Feather River, and watched them
both fill up. I've been deep down inside Shasta Dam, where it drips water
like in a cave. No novice here.
And don't even get me started on the Hetch-Hetchy issue.
Thanks!
Cat

Wait a minute. You do realize that Cheney and his pals made a fortune due
to that energy rip off there?
Jason, I'm in the dark here (actually, no, the light is on just fine) - but
WHAT is everyone talking about? Where it there a black out?

Across the mid atlantic. I don't know what is still out ... NYC was out last
nite.
We escaped it due to the infrastructure coming in to the steel mills and
hospitals.
You don't even want to know the system that is still used in a lot of
places.
