Hi guys,
I tried something yesterday, which was to write a contemporary history while
incorporating fairy-tale structures and what I hoped was a 'bardic
storytelling mode'. It's very political, and I respect the rights of the
people here to disagree with my politics. The reason that I'm posting it is
because it's my effort at telling a story in a bardic/druidic way, and I'd
appreciate commentary on the way that I've presented these ideas.
Thanks,
Nick
Once upon a time at the CIA
Once upon a time, there was an organization called the OSS. The OSS was in
charge of spying on a country called Germany. This was important, because
the OSS was a part of the US military, and the US military was in the
business of killing German soldiers at the time. They did a pretty good job
of finding out what was happening in Germany. And after a while, the German
army was defeated. But the US president decided that it was a useful thing
to have spies, especially because there was a very scary man in Russia
called Joe, who frightened the US president (and the US people) a great
deal.
But there was a problem with spying on Russia, which was that the OSS didn't
have any agents in Russia, and none of their existing staff could speak
Russian, and it would take years and years and years to inflitrate Russia.
This was a pretty urgent problem, because Joe was a scary, violent man, and
they needed to know if he was going to attack or not.
That was when the OSS got talking to a bunch of guys that called themselves
the Gestapo. The Gestapo had been a part of the German military, and the
German military wasn't just in the business of killing Americans, it was
also in the business of killing Russians. And the guys in the Gestapo had a
problem because they had all of these spies who spoke Russian really well
who were looking for jobs. So the guys from the OSS got together with the
guys from the Gestapo, and they made a new organization called the CIA, and
they spied on the Russians, and a bunch of other people as well.
Now, those guys from the Gestapo had learned some pretty important lessons
from watching their friends in the army get killed by Russians and
Americans. Specifically, they knew that they didn't want to be in the army,
they wanted someone else to do the fighting for them. They also knew that
they really didn't like the Russians, because the word was that Russians
didn't like rich people. So they set about working out how to have a war
without using an army.
Another bunch of people that the Gestapo didn't like was the French. Because
nobody likes the French. And the French had a colony in a place called
Vietnam. And there was a bunch of guys in Vietnam called the Viet Minh, and
they thought that Vietnam should be run by Vietnamese people. And since
nobody likes the French, the CIA got some weapons, and some people who were
really good at using those weapons, and sent them over to Vietnam and taught
the Viet Minh how to fight, and gave them the weapons.
And the Viet Minh fought the French, and the French went away, and everybody
had a party. (Except the French. But who cares?) A government was
established in Vietnam, and it was a dictatorship, and all of the people
from the Viet Minh decided that the whole exercise had been a bit pointless,
and they rang up the CIA and asked for some more help. But the CIA was
satisfied at having gotten rid of the French, and didn't see any need to
take things any further.
So the guys from the Viet Minh asked the Chinese for help, and the Chinese
guys gave the Viet Minh some more weapons and some more help, and the Viet
Minh got to work getting rid of the current government. And then the Chinese
said, "We'd love to help, but we're only going to help you if you're
communists, here's a book about Marx for you to read." And the Viet Minh
read the book about Marx, decided that it was better than the dictatorship
that was in place at the time, and renamed themselves the Viet Cong.
When the Americans heard about this, they were very upset, because they were
very afraid of communists. And they sent a whole bunch of soldiers to
Vietnam to beat up the Viet Cong. But the Viet Cong didn't fight fair - they
put bombs in front of buildings and blew them up, and would shoot one
soldier and then run away, and similar dirty tricks. In the end, even though
there were a lot of really well-equipped Americans in Vietnam, they packed
up and went home, because they just couldn't win. (It probably didn't help
that the Americans were doing horrible and brutal things to innocent
civilians while they were there.)
But let's forget about Vietnam, because the real action is in the Middle
East.
You see, the Russians invaded Afghanistan. And the CIA really didn't like
the idea that the Russians could do that, and so they got in touch with a
bunch of guys who lived in the area, including a guy called Osama. And they
gave Osama weapons, and experts in killing people, and Osama and his pals
got together and they killed a whole lot of Russians. They did it by putting
bombs in buildings, or by shooting one soldier and then running away. Even
though there were a lot of really well-equipped Russians in Afghanistan,
they packed up and went home, because they just couldn't win. And a new
government was established in Afghanistan, and it was a dictatorship. But
the CIA was satisfied at having gotten rid of the Russians, and didn't see
any need to take things further.
Right now, Osama and his pals are working at getting some other white devils
off their land. It probably doesn't help the Americans that their soldiers
are doing some very nasty things to some innocent-looking people right now.
But we don't need to worry, because there's a lot of them, and they're
really well-equipped. |

The biggest problems in Vietnam was that the ordinary person did not
benefit from our presence there and didn't really support our efforts.
The other problems were politicians in and out of the military,. IMO,
those are the biggest problem in Iraq as well We don't have any business
being there either. We also shouldn't support corrupt governments,
starting first at home. I enjoyed the story.
The role of a Druid would be to tell such a story to the gathering of
the people before such a thing happened so that they'd have the benefit
of wise council and precedent before undertaking a battle or a war. with
anyone. Too bad that present day advisor don't impart wisdom in the old
ways, and even worse, present day rulers don't embrace or exemplify
truth.
