I just remembered that this coming weekend I'm booked to give a very
short talk and lead a discussion on the Covenant of Alast at a local
Winter Retreat. I think I have the pre-Baha'i stuff covered enough
for this very unacademic forum but I want to get as many definite or
likely references to the Covenant of Alast as possible from
Baha'u'llah in particular and the Writings in general. Can anyone
make suggestions?

I already know of:
A reference in The Long Healing Prayer
A reference in the SDC
Several References in the Provisional Translation of Baha'u'llah's
Mathnavi
Several passages in the Hidden Wirds that appear to echo the Alast
Covenant but have (according to Taharzedeh) been interpreted by Abdul-
Baha as being abou the wee Covenant.

Anyone know any more? Thanks in advance.

Dear John,

I would add to this the poem Tahirih wrote when she recognized the
Bab. For a non-Baha'i source read Annemarie Schimmel's Islamic
Mysticism. I've written a paper on this entitled *The Covenant as
Responsiveness.* I can post some of it here if you like.

Dear friend-
Here is a little well known reference that to me is very interesting.
"Today, the Lord of Hosts is the defender of the Covenant, the
forces of the Kingdom protect it, heavenly souls tender their services

and heavenly angels promulgate and spread it broadcast. If it is
considered with insight, it will be seen that all the forces of the
universe, in the last analysis serve the Covenant." –Abdu'l-Baha,
from
Tablet, Star of West, Vol. 1, #242.

regards,
doug

Is that this one? If not can you give me a link.
"The effulgence of thy face flashed forth and the rays of thy
visage arose on high;
Then speak the word, "Am I not your Lord?" and "Thou
art, thou art!" we will all reply1.
Thy trumpet-call "Am I not?" to greet how loud the drums
of affliction beat!
At the gates of my heart there tramp the feet and camp the
hosts of calamity.
That fair moon's love is enough, I trow, for me, for he
laughed at the hail of woe,
And triumphant cried,as he sunk below,"The Martyr of
Karbalá am I!"

For a non-Baha'i source read Annemarie Schimmel's Islamic

Mysticism.

I don't think I've got time to even get hold of the book by Friday
let alone read and assimilate it but I'll note the name for later,

If there are any relevant passages short enough to be appropriate to
a newsgroup that would be of considerable general interest but
probably I haven't got the time to utilise anything new by this
weekend.

Thanks again for the poem.
