right?

If you're willing to separate Tina from Ed, I don't
get the impression that Tina was ever all that
interested in extremists. She seemed more interested
in topics like handicrafts so I figure she'll do
fine with the list.

As to Ed I can't speak for him but he and I did
discuss that question several years ago on ARA so
his comments on the topic should be searchable on
Google groups. Being several years old, I have no
idea how current his posts back then would be now.

My experience is different as regards the former part of your
statement, but the last sentence is the reassurance I'm seeking.
Parents should, however, be fully informed so that they may make an
informed decision, just as they should if Von Otto's associate Schmitt
is involved in any way, given the controversies previously discussed in
a.r.a.

On the surface they have severed their ties with extremists after 9/11 so
they are not considered domestic terrorists. I find this very convenient and
very coincidental considering these folks are not all that young, but
approaching middle-age.

Hey Eric, I'm doing good. Our family is going to be growing soon and I am
busy at work and home keeping things together. I did have an interesting
experience a couple of months ago regarding extremists in Asatru/Heathenism.
It regarded how their connection with our religion is very lousy PR for us,
but many people who obviously should know better still seem to put up with
them. This is the reason I replied to this topic. I'll keep in touch.

It's a tale that never ends. A couple of us are aware of an
Asatru-extremist connection which has yet to be spot-lighted, but bodes
ill for the good folk when it is.

IMO it depends on what the connection actually is.
I have no problem with neonazis, trots, anarchists etc being Asatru.
I *do* have a problem of anyone mixing their politics into Asatru and setting
themselves up as 'The One True Way'.

At a Blot I expect people to toast their hosts, the Gods, their family, their
ancestors etc. But not political figures (unless related to them as part of a
proven family heritage). Anyone toasting Mao will get the same reception from me
as if they toast Hitler. And ditto anyone toasting Bush, Blair, Chirac etc.

Nor do I expect them to disrespect other guests in any way whether as a matter
of politics, race, gender or sexual orientation.

They can be as racist, sexist and homophobic as they like on their own time.

As ever, a reasonable position.

I take it a bit further myself. Racist extremists have so
interpenetrated parts of Asatru, have so influenced the agenda towards
a racial one (the distinguishing feature of the "folkish"), have been
so sly about doing so with back-channel communications and leadership
structures beyond the formal but largely formalized structures most
members see, and we have been so closely identified in the US with such
extremists, that I favor and practice distancing. Even informal
conversations at Asatru gatherings by extremists chase away good
people. I think that many in the US have lost sight of just how
repulsed ordinary folks are by the sort of people all too often
accepted because they're "nice guys" or "Asatru, too".

Yes, that is exactly it. Much of the extremist agenda is kept under wraps,
but it certainly exists. It is tolerated far too much, so much so that it is
now entrenched. I have an uneasy feeling in the near future there will be
news reports on the spread of Asatru in prisons (whose members are
predominantly extremists) and their connections to extremist groups on the
outside. This will not bode well to normal, everday, hard-working,
family-oriented Asatru/Heathens in society, who may be looked at with
askance by the general pubic due to any perceived affiliation with such
extremists. Additionally, due to post 9/11 domestic terrorism laws, good
folk may be investigated by law enforcement and may be denied , or lose,
jobs or promotions due to security reasons.
This is how the the existence of extremists in Asatru/Heathenism could
detrimentally affect life in general for normal people.

Good point. We've definitely been placed in a weak position should
anyone seek to demonize the whole religion by highlighting those
connections, and I think you're spot-on that the prisons are a key.

That may be true in the US but is far less so here.

But then, more than 1 of every 140 Americans is in prison. The US
prison population would easily constitute the second largest city in
Great Britain, with more than double Birmingham's population. British
politicians aren't as adept as their American counterparts in
exploiting fear for power and control, nor thankfully, do the British
people seem as susceptible or malleable.

Maybe the fact that one in three British men has a criminal record also has
something to do with it.
