We're trying to push Ivan the Terrible into the Gulf so that he avoids
Florida, which has had way too much damage already. Unfortunate for the
people of Grenada. What a mess!

Let's not push it too hard. Our house in Gulfport is that direction. The
trouble with hurricanes that get into the Gulf is they are going to hit
someone eventually no matter where they go. What would have been nice
would be to push it into the Atlantic and let it thrash around out that
way. Now. it looks like the folks up towards Tallahassee will get it. I
hope that it doesn't go across northern Florida. That's horse country.
It's also filled with a lot of friends and relatives.

There's just not a good place for it based on the path it is on right
now. The best we can hope for is that Cuba is enough of an impact on it
to get it down to category 1 or tropical storm strength. I'll be in
Orlando on Sunday to begin work on a contract that should last through
the end of the year. That'll place me there during the rest of
hurricane season. :-(

Yes, well, we were hoping to push it out over the water and minimize
its impact on land. And it would be difficult (and probably create more
problems) to change its trajectory at this point.

I have a lot of family with property and lives in Florida at this point
who can't take another blast, so I'm really concerned. When we called the
insurance company yesterday, they had us on hold for twenty minutes and then
said they will be addressing claims in order of priority. Only 30% of Vero
Beach area has their power back on from Frances.

See, and now you in Florida, too! Good luck to you, my friend.

Up here we've had our own problems...flooding, which is not conducive
to harvest (a foot of standing water in the onions last week), and the
mosquitoes are carrying EEE. A man right nearby has had to put down at least
ten ponies. (Mine are vaccinated.) They will be aerial spraying for the
mosquitoes tonight, but why in the world did they wait so long? The
mosquitoes have been unbelieveable all summer (if you can call it summer).
You can't even work outside after 6 p.m. on a sunny day, and on a cloudy
day, forget it.

Agreed. I'm doing what I can and thinking the same things.

My friends in West Palm beach and along the east coast of Florida can't
take another storm any time soon. Those in Orlando, are inconvenienced
and aggravated but not in as much actual danger from loss. Those who
live off the land are suffering major losses.

Don't worry about me. My evasive movement is 140 mph when in danger.Smile
I've found that high ground, adequate emergency supplies and solid
structures are a triad that endures when flight is not possible (even in
a category five or a tornado environment). It also helps to work
together with one's neighbors during times of emergency.

I hear that some folks have developed a removable mosquito fogger for
automobiles, trucks and tractors. That might be a good investment for
those who have such problems, though the local/state governments are
supposed to provide this service from the taxes paid to them.

Here's hoping that the rains abate for your harvests and that they are
all prosperous and safe.

I'll be going to Florida on Sunday and will see what I can do.

Oddly enough I just got back from a trip to the US and Canada. Even more
oddly, things do seem to happen when I go there, though not in my vicinity.
First time it was a major rash of tornados across the south as I flew in to
OKC. Next, it was 9/11. Now, a rash of hurricanes. Spooky. Smile Wonder what
will happen next time? Smile Maybe I shouldn't visit during your forthcoming
election! Wink Who knows what might happen then? <Twilight Zone music!>

I can thoroughly recommend Wade's cooking BTW! Smile And we had good weather
throughout - but then I've always been lucky with the weather on my trips,
touch wood <touches his head!>.

~~Yes, well, we were hoping to push it out over the water and minimize
its impact on land.

In future, give a shot to drying them out.

Air currents are a part of nature, and extremely difficult to fight
effectively. However, hurricanes lose power greatly without moisture.
Perhaps it would be far easier to try a different angle of attack?

My condolences to those who lost anyone close to them. This spate of
storms sounded bad.

The predicted tracks seem very probabilistic, and it takes several weeks for
them to cross the Atlantic. If it veers off to the north by only a little
bit, it can miss the Florida coast altogether. Some even travel N-S. Others
seem to get more disorganised, and cease to rotate, while at sea and become
tropical storms and then tropical depressions.

Just thoughts.

Jeanne is about to hit the east coast of Florida. Category 3 on
Safir-Simpson scale i.e. dangerous. Looking at the satellite imagery, the
whole system is comparable to the size of the state, though the hurricane
itself is smaller and tighter. Max winds 115 mph, gusts up to 140 mph, speed
14 mph, pressure 950 mb, hurricane force winds expected up to 100 miles
inland, and extend up to 70 miles from the centre - tropical storm force
winds expected to stretch up to 205 miles from the centre. A storm surge of
4-7 feet above normal tide levels is expected.

Take care.
