How much should I give? The question should not be “how much” but
rather “how” I should give. I should give because my heart is
stirred, and I am willing in spirit to give back to the Lord first
from the bounty He has given me. Freely I have received, freely I
should give. And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and
every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the LORD's
offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for
all his service, and for the holy garments. (Exodus 35:21)
Deuteronomy 16:17 states: Every man shall give as he is able,
according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which He hath given
thee. When we reflect on how blessed we truly are, our first response
will be to give to the Lord freely, as we are able, from the things He
has given us. When we give as much as we are able, as much as we in
freedom feel good about, then we truly are giving thanks. We are
giving something that is of value to us. This kind of giving causes
us to stop and really think about the Lord. We are not just casting
into the treasury out of our abundance something that really didn’t
cost us something, something we wouldn’t miss or even notice. We are
giving something freely that reflects the whole of our blessing, our
very existence, and when we give like this, we are acknowledging from
our heart our complete and total dependence on the Lord. We know this
is how the Lord looks on it, when we read the account of the widow
casting in her mites from Mark 12:41-44: She of her want did cast in
all that she had, even all her living.
In the mind of Christ,
Michael
