On page 85 of the Maurice Bessy book, "A Pictorial History of Magic and the Supernatural", illustration #262 (regarding Egyptian religion) it says:

"The respect in which initiates were held was such that it equalled and even surpassed worldly success. Moreover, it found expression through triumphal processions. Pagan antiquity and the biblical world did not oppose spiritual accomplishments and social success. Amongst the Egyptians, poverty was considered as a disease."

I am interested in any references to "poverty being considered a disease" by Egyptians, and most particularly in any Christian references during the "biblical world" where poverty was considered a disease.

Does anyone know anything about this concept, or was it just something the author "pulled out of his hat" to finish a sentence.

Thanking you in advance..........
