JOB LOSSES ACCELERATING, AND THE WORST IS AHEAD
By CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER, AP Economics Writer Christopher S. Rugaber,
Ap Economics Writer – 1 hr 29 mins ago Thu 23 Oct 2008 15:56:13 PDT
WASHINGTON – Unemployment claims, already well into recession territory,
are rising even faster than expected, leading economists to warn
Thursday that the worst is yet to come.
As the Labor Department released bleak new numbers on the job market,
Goldman Sachs, Chrysler and Xerox all announced they were cutting
workers by the thousands, adding to the woes of an economy beset by
tighter credit and wobbly banks.
The government said new applications for unemployment insurance rose
15,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 478,000, above analysts'
estimates of 470,000. Jobless claims above 400,000 are considered a sign
of recession.
The White House, in unusually stark language, acknowledged the economy
is going through what spokeswoman Dana Perino called a "rough ride."
"We expect our GDP (gross domestic product) number next week not to be a
good one and the next quarter to be tough as well," Perino said.
The Commerce Department will release its first estimate of third-quarter
economic performance Oct. 30, and Wall Street analysts project it will
show the economy contracted by 0.5 percent, according to Thomson/IFR.
Many economists expect the decline to continue into the current quarter
and the first three months of 2009, if not longer. The classic
definition of a recession is at least two consecutive quarters of
negative growth.
Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, testifying before a
House committee, said he could not see "how we can avoid a significant
rise in layoffs and unemployment."
Zach Pandl, an economist at Barclays Capital, estimates that
unemployment will rise to between 7 percent and 8 percent by early next
year. Other economists have estimated it could rise to 8.5 percent.
Currently, the unemployment rate is 6.1 percent. Unemployment peaked at
6.3 percent in 2003 after the brief recession of 2001. It peaked at 7.8
percent in the 1991-92 recession, and above 10 percent in 1982.
The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said it would cut about 3,260 jobs, or 10
percent of its work force, in the face of what Greenspan called a "once
in a century credit tsunami" that has claimed several of Goldman's rival
investment banks.
Also on Thursday, Chrysler LLC said it would cut 1,825 jobs and Xerox
Corp. said it plans to eliminate 3,000 positions, or 5 percent of its
work force.
Other companies have announced reductions this week: Yahoo Inc. is
cutting 10 percent of its employees, or 1,500 people, drugmaker Merck &
Co. is eliminating 7,200 positions, and financial services firm National
City Corp. will shed 4,000 jobs.
The impact of the job losses is rippling through the economy. As jobs
disappear, foreclosures rise when out-of-work homeowners can no longer
make mortgage payments.

Associated Press writers Martin Crutsinger in Washington and Tim Paradis
in New York contributed to this report.

Note:
"The impact of job losses is rippling through the economy. As jobs
disappear, foreclosures rise ..."
What many seem hesitent to do, is look for the root cause of the job
losses. It is foolish to blame job losses on mortgage foreclosures --
since the mortgage default does not occur until after the job loss.
There must be a cause for the job losses other that the credit slump
caused by the subprime failures, since the subprime failure was cause by
people being unable to make their pamyents because they had lost their jobs.
What many refuse to consider, is that the contraction, or reduction, of
manufacturing jobs began as an adjustment due to concerns over the
availability of fossil fuel. Experts in industry have been aware of the
limits reached in the Oil Cartel's ability to increase the production
and supply of fuel. Industry and Manufactoring are completely dependent
on the supply of fossil fuel. If the production and supply of fossil
fuel can not increase, then industry and manufactoring can not grow. The
result is that both the supply of fuel and the supply of goods does not
meet the demand, and companys begin to cut production, and jobs.

Have a little faith Glenn.
Mat 17:20 And Yeshua said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for
verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye
shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it
shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
If only you had even a mustard seed of faith, you wouldn't worry.
Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the
one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise
the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Mat 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life,
what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what
ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than
raiment?
Mat 6:26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do
they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth
them. Are ye not much better than they?
Mat 6:27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his
stature?
Mat 6:28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of
the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
Mat 6:29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory
was not arrayed like one of these.
Mat 6:30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to
day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more
clothe you, O ye of little faith?
Mat 6:31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or,
What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
Mat 6:32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your
heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Mat 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow
shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day
is the evil thereof.
Instead of the self fulfillment, speak some good things into the
world..
Pro 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they
that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
You're loved:)

Snow, thanks for your comments.
I'm not worried about a job, I'm retired.
For the most part you are correct. In the general daily flow of our
lives, we can believe and speak good things, and enjoy the results.
However, need I remind you, that regardless of how much faith the Jews
of AD 70 had in their walls, the city fell! Why? Because the will of God
is above the will of men.
What God has determined can not be turned aside by men saying nice things.
As the Spirit of the Lord said to Daniel: "...and that determined shall
be poured upon the desolate." God has "determined..."
Saying nice things will not delay or prevent the coming of the Lord, nor
any of those events which are part of the sequence of human and world
events leading up to and culminating in His return.
The rise of the EU to be Modern Rome is just one of these determined
world events. The depletion of fossil fuels, aka "peak oil," is just one
of those pre-determined world events. The One World Church is another,
as is the One World Economy. There are many more, if you'd care to look:

How very true Glenn but lets not forget... nobody knows his will. The
power of repentance to turn back wrath is great!
Deu 4:27 And YHWH shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be
left few in number among the heathen, whither YHWH shall lead you.
Deu 4:28 And there ye shall serve elohim, the work of mens hands, wood
and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
Deu 4:29 But if from thence thou shalt seek YHWH thy Elohim, thou
shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy
soul.
Deu 4:30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come
upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to YHWH thy Elohim,
and shalt be obedient unto his voice;
Deu 4:31 (For YHWH thy Elohim is a merciful El;)he will not forsake
thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers
which he sware unto them.

Sad, Mike, that you reject the Messiah of God, but I do wonder if you'd
consider the fact that, for the most part, the entire "Intelligentsia"
of his day rejected Him....
....no wonder then that the intellectual and educated of our day deny Him.
So go for it, Mike, I know your are too intelligent to believe... You
want to believe the delusion of the intellectuals ... the faculty of
UCSD, Berkeley, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Emory,
Vanderbilt ... those who rejected Him at his birth, and will most
certainly reject Him when He returns....
Fine... you believe them, I believe Him.
