Occam does it for me. It's only logical that abstracts are first abstracts
before someone starts using metaphors in order to explain them
but never the other way around. Furthermore, we all know there have
always been two versions of the same stories. The pragmatic one for the
learned/knowing and another one for the 'common people' full of analogies
and poetic word smithery, designed to translate the message into
mundane, emotional, everyday language and occurences which
people can relate to, without having to get themselves some degree
in something. In short, nothing more than an elaborate system of playing
Q&A on the level of "Why does it rain?" "Because god cries".

Personally, I do appreciate your ties with academia in the field and
likewise your influenced approach which is a blessing in comparison
to all the woo-woo comments out there, but that doesn't mean I'd
buy the whole farm. Most of these people have no clue what they're
commenting on and when they do, tend to incorporate all the old
misconceptions from their predecessors into their own approach
and then carry them even further.
In the above case, it's "but a commentator on his poem, writing in
Switzerland in the ninth century AD, clearly had access to early
documents that have since been lost, for he elaborates" blablahblah.
Probably never occurred to her that *everyone* in western Europe
writing in eighthundred-something about the 'old faith' must have
written with the interest of the church in mind, or there wouldn't
be any documentation at all; especially not about an oral trad.

I still don't see why cart wheels like that would only be identified
as cart wheels when there's a frame attached to them. Sure,
they're 'doodle' versions of functioning wheels but they're still

Ah, well there you have a rub! They picked up writing by
territorial proximity in order to be able to write their thoughts on
things, so of necessity there was some acculturation. There won't,
OTOH, be inscriptions from areas where they are not acculturated to
some degree. We can't therefore say anything about them at that
stage. Which of course rules out all the Irish texts cos they were
close enough to the empire to have some acculturation. :-)
OTOH, given the antiquity of the notion of deity, it's probably
unlikely that unacculturated Celtic-speaking people lacked gods. Of
course, there is the hypothesis that groups that remained
unacculturated by Mediterranean cultures eventually developed a
trading culture centred on the Baltic which led to the development of
the Germanic languages - and the Germanic-speaking peoples certainly
had gods. However, by the time they get round to telling us about
gods, they've also adopted writing and become acculturated. :-)
Problem! We have similar problems with dealing with, for example,
the Neolithic.

The certainty with which modern academia approaches the identification
of "Continental Celtic deities" by polytheist definition despite any real
evidence never ceases to baffle me. Not that there wouldn't be any
evidence from that place and time at all. There's tons of evidence,
tens- if not hundreds of thousands of pieces of evidence. The whole
range from clothing to jewelry to weaponry to pottery to architectural
remains to statuettes, carvings, decorations and and and.
- with one exception: There's not a single dependable piece of evidence
for the Gauls' 'belief in gods" anywhere, prior to the Romano-Gallic
culture.
If you or anyone else has one, I'd be happy to hear about it.
