With the Blessing of Patriarch Alexy, Liturgical Prayers for Peace in
the Caucasus Are to Be Added to Divine Services
MOSCOW: August 17, 2008
Beginning today, in the churches of the Russian Orthodox Church, in
addition to the usual petitions during the divine services there will
be offered up prayers especially composed for the deliverance of the
peoples of the Caucasus from "enmity, disorder and civil strife."
Petitions for Peace in the Caucasus:
That Thou mayest bless the nations of the Caucasus with Thy goodness
and quell among them enmity, disorders and civil strife; and grant
them a peaceful life and length of days, we beseech Thee, O Lord:
Hearken, and have mercy!
That Thou mayest deliver the peoples of the Caucusus from all
tribulation, perils, wrath and need, and from all enemies, and mayest
surround them with peace and the armies of Thine angels, we beseech
Thee, O all-good Lord: Hearken, and have mercy!
__________________________
In addition to these petitions, there is a specially-composed "Prayer
for Peace in the Caucasus", the text of which follows:
Prayer for Peace in the Caucasus:
O Master Who lovest mankind, King of the ages and Bestower of good
things, Who hast destroyed enmity and givest peace to the human race:
Grant peace even now unto all Thy servants who dwell in the lands of
the Caucasus, and especially to the much-suffering people of South
Ossetia. Establish among our nations love one for another; quell every
uprising; and allay all dissent and temptations. Grant unto them, O
Lord, health and oneness of mind, protect them from all tribulations,
afflictions and sudden death; bring an end to all enmity and malice
which ariseth through the activity of the devil. Plant peace, O Lord,
through the intercessions of the holy Theotokos, of the holy Apostle
Andrew the First-called, of the first hierarchs of Moscow, of the holy
Nina, Equal-to-the-Apostles, and of the Great Martyr George the
Victorious. For Thou art our peace, and we send up glory unto Thee—the
Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit—now and ever, and unto the ages of
ages. Amen.

If he was serious about peace, he'd walk down the street and tell Putin
to pull his troops back, as he agreed to.

Judgemental, aren't you? How do you know what takes place in
Moscow?... what conversations there are between Putin and the
Patriarch?
And the French brokered ceasefire agreement does not in fact call for
the total withdrawal of all Russian forces from Georgia. That was a
little surprising... clearly the French President Nicolas Sarkozy who
was on Moscow lastTuesday to draw up the terms of the ceasefire is not
unsympathetic to the Russian concerns about the Caucasus region. So
this constant repetition of "Russia has lied, Russia has lied..." is
simple a foolish ignorance of the terms of the ceasefire. |

They have not lied, Joe. People say that because they are ignorant of
the terms of the ceasefire.
The terms of the French brokered ceasefire allow the Russians to
remain in Georgia as a limited military presence. They are NOT
required to leave the country entirely.

Oh, excuse me for being cynical about the motives of the ROC leadership.
Go by their track record, I'm way out of line to question their pious
intentions.

Brown calls for Russia withdrawal
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has joined the US in calling for Russia to
immediately withdraw from Georgia.
Mr Brown spoke in a phone call to Georgian president Mikhail
Saakashvili, after his meeting in Tbilisi with US Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice.
Russia's incursion was a "completely unjustified violation of Georgia's
territorial integrity", the prime minister's spokesman said.
In addition, Britain is to give £2m to the Red Cross appeal for Georgia.
International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander said the money
would help International Committee of the Red Cross staff on the ground
provide extra medical and surgical aid to the injured.
It would also help restore the water supply in Tskhinvali, the main town
of the breakaway region, South Ossetia.
Ceasefire deal
Georgia's president has signed an EU-brokered ceasefire deal, after
nearly five hours of talks on Friday.
Speaking after his phone call to Georgia, Mr Brown said he welcomed
President Saakashvili's commitment to implement the peace agreement -
brokered by the French President Nicolas Sarkozy - without delay.
His spokesman said that he had underlined the UK's support for a peace
process, and expressed the UK's willingness to contribute to the
proposed monitoring mission by the Organisation for Security and
Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
The crisis began when Georgia attacked the breakaway region of South
Ossetia a week ago, sparking Russian intervention.
Russian troops continue to occupy positions in Georgia.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said earlier that the Georgian
president's acceptance of a six-point ceasefire plan meant all Russian
combat forces should leave immediately.
Cameron visit
Conservative leader David Cameron will visit Georgia on Saturday.
Earlier in the week, Mr Cameron said Britain and the West should be
doing more to prevent Russian aggression and called on Mr Brown to step
up diplomatic pressure on Russia.
BBC political correspondent David Thompson said Mr Cameron believed the
British government had been slow to respond to the crisis, which flared
up while the prime minister and foreign secretary were on holiday.
The government has held talks with Mr Sarkozy, UN Secretary General Ban
Ki Moon and G7 and EU foreign ministers.
On Tuesday, Mr Brown said he had told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev
"very directly" that "Russian aggression" had been condemned around the
world and said the UK would provide humanitarian aid to the region.
The Liberal Democrats have urged the EU and others to "show tough
resolve in helping to negotiate a lasting peace". |

Most of the orthodox churches in the Washington, DC area have been
praying all along with no bias to either side, just for a ceasefire and
peace for both Georgian and Ossetians as well as Russians.

Limited patrols doesn't include severing the country in half, continuing
a vandalism spree, kidnapping more Georgians, setting up roadblocks on
highways, soldiers digging trenches, and tanks moving closer to Tblisi.
You've got a funny definition of "limited". Ooooops, forgot. In
Russian, "limited" means "occupation". More of what we can expect from
these Soviet reconstructionists. |

It was a lie. Journalists, including the BBC on the ground with video
cameras, said Russian troops were in Gori. To this, Peter retorted that
it was PR scam from a Belgian firm. |
