Great. Wonderful. Now can we shut the fuck up about it?

Only if the Catholics will.

How childish. "I will if you will!" This whole bunch of nonsense
certainly shows us that a cracker is not, in fact, just a fucking
cracker.

If you don't like it, ignore it.

Why should I do that?

Bill Donahue has already called for PZ's ouster from the university.

http://www.catholicleague.org/release.php?id=1465

“A formal complaint against Myers has already been made. What he did—
in both word and deed—constitutes a bias incident, as defined by the
University of Minnesota. The policy says that ‘Expressions of
disrespectful bias, hate, harassment or hostility against an
individual, group or their property because of the individual or
group’s actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion…can be forms
of discrimination. Expressions vary, and can be in the form of
language, words, signs, symbols, threats, or actions that could
potentially cause alarm, anger, fear, or resentment in others…even
when presented as a joke.’

“The University must now take action and apply the appropriate
sanction. We are contacting the president, Board of Regents and the
Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Office at the school, as well
as Minnesota’s governor and both houses of the state legislature; the
Catholic community in Minnesota is also being contacted. Moreover, we
are also contacting Muslim groups nationwide.

“It is important for Catholics to know that the University of
Minnesota will not tolerate the deliberate destruction of the
Eucharist by one of its faculty. Just as African Americans would not
tolerate the burning of a cross, and Jews would not tolerate the
display of swastikas, Catholics will not tolerate the desecration of
the Eucharist.”

But, it seems, Catholic will tolarate the burning of a desecrator.

I makes me wonder if PZ actually desecrated a consecrated host or
merely a pre-transubstantiated wafer bought from his local chuch
supply store.  And who could tell the difference?

That catholic league noise sounds so very Islamist. A very small step
from rioting in the streets and burning things. Maybe they can wave
Kalashnikovs in the air too.

Time for some cartoons of the pope with a cracker in his headgear.

I think it would be funnier if the cartoon were of Bill Donahue with
steam coming out of his ears -- sort of like that electrocuted pickle.

Liz #658

Someone explain to me the differance between the Muslims going ape
shit over some cartoons and the Cathlicks going ape shit over a
cracker? I just don't get it.

The Muslims rioted and killed people and the Catholics did not?

Nice essay. And, a very good quote for a future sig:

God is not great, Jesus is not your lord, you are not disciples of any
charismatic prophet. You are all human beings who must make your way
through your life by thinking and learning, and you have the job of
advancing humanities' knowledge by winnowing out the errors of past
generations and finding deeper understanding of reality. You will not
find wisdom in rituals and sacraments and dogma, which build only
self-satisfied ignorance, but you can find truth by looking at your
world with fresh eyes and a questioning mind.

OK, I'll post it as an AQOTM, and see if the rules committee objects.

Great. Wonderful. Now can we shut the fuck up about it?

The problem didn't go away so I don't think shutting the fuck up about
it would be the proper action.  The problem is that certain people
feel entited by their religion to make society as a whole conform to
their religious tenets.

My duh meter just exploded. This is not news to anyone.

It doesn't matter whether the question
revolves around the disrespect of a wafer, cartoons in the newspaper,
the use of birth control, or the teaching of evolution in public
schools.  All of these violate the demands of someone's god and create
furors even though there is no common sense reason to respect a bit of
wheat flour and water, refrain from printing cartoons, avoid using
birth control, or desist teaching science in a science class.

Shit, I lost another duh meter.

Rationality precludes me from taking any religious mythology
seriously, and to act as though a wafer was sacred when I believe it
is not is to give these mythologies a power they do not have and do
not deserve.

Yeah.

Bill Donahue should not have the power to say who should or should not
teach or attend a public university

He should not, and does not.

Bill Donahue should not have the
power to prescribe or proscribe behavior for those who do not believe
in the same myth he does.

He should not, and does not.

But not for want of trying.

Quote:

As PZ said, nothing is sacred.

Indeed, although we really do not need PZ to remind us of this.

Not us here, but for those outside this newsgroup, it is mandatory. I
don't think I look good in a burka.

Quote:

And no, I will not shut the fuck up about it.

I seem to have struck a nerve.

<snork> No nerve, just negating your original plea reminding you that
I'll discuss anything I want with or without your approval.

If it bothers you, I suggest you quit reading the threads.

I admit to having a good chuckle when I saw the photo of the cracker
amongst the Qur'an, The God Delusion, banana peel, and coffee rounds,
however.

I don't think Bill Donahue had quite the same reaction. And that
thought makes me smile.

Someone explain to me the differance between the Muslims going ape
shit over some cartoons and the Cathlicks going ape shit over a
cracker? I just don't get it.

The Muslims rioted and killed people and the Catholics did not?

Yet?
I mean, they could...

Nice rationalization.

Nope. The cath'liks could.

They (And other xtrians) have before, and could again.

You will not find
wisdom in rituals and sacraments and dogma, which build only
self-satisfied ignorance, but you can find truth by looking at your world
with fresh eyes and a questioning mind.

PZ Meyers knows, contrary to Eugenie C. Scott, that the weight of
evidence [ Paul Draper] shows no cosmic telology, so she is ever so
wrong to bray that we who note that against theistic evolution and
that evolution does show no designer. She wants to placate
creationists.
The wafers as part of the Eucharist are a mystery with the
Trinity, the Atonement and such that they surround the great mystery,
God, who is supposed to be the First Cause [ explanation] , but is
only a pseudo-explanation explaining only God did it, so
unimformative! Hypotheses should be simple, conservative [ in line
with what we know], predictive and have scope, of which the God-
explantion is none. It is the mere pareidolia of seeing a caring, super
mind behind Existence like seeing Yeshua in a tortilla. It is
Feurbach's projection. It is just a mere feeling which acts as a
placebo and thus can be postive or even negative.

Catholics rioted and killed people over a blog posting or a cartoon?

I dunno about a cartoon, but this whole thread is about them going
apeshit over a cracker.
