Sadly, all this shows is that some members of the catholic church are little
better than that idiot family that causes so much sadness at the burials of
soldiers.
Does anybody respect the beliefs of a 40-year old who still believes in
Santa Claus? (A character for which there is more evidence than any god.)

Bill Donahue has already called for PZ's ouster from the university.
http://www.catholicleague.org/release.php?id=1465
“A formal complaint against Myers has already been made. What he did—
in both word and deed—constitutes a bias incident, as defined by the
University of Minnesota. The policy says that ‘Expressions of
disrespectful bias, hate, harassment or hostility against an
individual, group or their property because of the individual or
group’s actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion…can be forms
of discrimination. Expressions vary, and can be in the form of
language, words, signs, symbols, threats, or actions that could
potentially cause alarm, anger, fear, or resentment in others…even
when presented as a joke.’
“The University must now take action and apply the appropriate
sanction. We are contacting the president, Board of Regents and the
Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Office at the school, as well
as Minnesota’s governor and both houses of the state legislature; the
Catholic community in Minnesota is also being contacted. Moreover, we
are also contacting Muslim groups nationwide.
“It is important for Catholics to know that the University of
Minnesota will not tolerate the deliberate destruction of the
Eucharist by one of its faculty. Just as African Americans would not
tolerate the burning of a cross, and Jews would not tolerate the
display of swastikas, Catholics will not tolerate the desecration of
the Eucharist.”
But, it seems, Catholic will tolarate the burning of a desecrator.
I makes me wonder if PZ actually desecrated a consecrated host or
merely a pre-transubstantiated wafer bought from his local chuch
supply store. And who could tell the difference?

The U of M does indeed have a policy against "bias behavior" (for lack
of a better term), but since Professor Myers performed his act of
"desecration" off university property and on his own time, there's not
much they can do about it.

Nice essay. And, a very good quote for a future sig:
God is not great, Jesus is not your lord, you are not disciples of any
charismatic prophet. You are all human beings who must make your way
through your life by thinking and learning, and you have the job of
advancing humanities' knowledge by winnowing out the errors of past
generations and finding deeper understanding of reality. You will not find
wisdom in rituals and sacraments and dogma, which build only
self-satisfied ignorance, but you can find truth by looking at your world
with fresh eyes and a questioning mind.

because he would never post anything that was an "expression of

Ok. maybe he would. But being catholic he's part of an oppressed
minority, so that makes it alright.

That catholic league noise sounds so very Islamist. A very small step |
from rioting in the streets and burning things. Maybe they can wave
Kalashnikovs in the air too.
Time for some cartoons of the pope with a cracker in his headgear. |

Great. Wonderful. Now can we shut the fuck up about it?
|
The problem didn't go away so I don't think shutting the fuck up about
it would be the proper action. The problem is that certain people
feel entited by their religion to make society as a whole conform to
their religious tenets. It doesn't matter whether the question
revolves around the disrespect of a wafer, cartoons in the newspaper,
the use of birth control, or the teaching of evolution in public
schools. All of these violate the demands of someone's god and create
furors even though there is no common sense reason to respect a bit of
wheat flour and water, refrain from printing cartoons, avoid using
birth control, or desist teaching science in a science class.
Rationality precludes me from taking any religious mythology
seriously, and to act as though a wafer was sacred when I believe it
is not is to give these mythologies a power they do not have and do
not deserve.
Bill Donahue should not have the power to say who should or should not
teach or attend a public university. Bill Donahue should not have the
power to prescribe or proscribe behavior for those who do not believe
in the same myth he does.
As PZ said, nothing is sacred.
And no, I will not shut the fuck up about it.
If it bothers you, I suggest you quit reading the threads.
