First they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,

because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.
by Rev. Martin Niemoller, 1945
It's a specific historical reference for his recollection, but it's
also a
pattern that different groups were sent to the concentration camps
at different times. The Jews were neither the first nor the last.
They
were the largest population and thus get the most press. |

Interesting.
The history of it is well established. There were plenty of Jewish
WWI veterans around so at first the Nazis focused on other
groups. Some list gyspies as one of the first targets but that's
actually a broad descriptive term for unpopular groups not just
the Romany nomadic clans. Included in the sweep were ethnic
Gyspies, members of the WanderVogel movement who included
members focused on runes and the Aesir, assorted other small
minority groups. All groups smaller than the Jews and eventually
the Nazis wanted a larger scapegoat group so they proceeded
on to the Jews and gathered them up in the millions WWI era
veterans and all.

Interesting.

I don't recall ever finding it necessary to profess not to be a

It was more than personal misinformation, although that was an
extremely unpleasant aspect of the behaviour, it was a serious attempt
to slur the entirety of a religion.
That act was in and of itself an example of hate speech and
