Galina Note: I have been posting these Serbian Unity Congress
Messages, when I have the time, for years. unless anyone should come
under the malimpressio9n that I am a Serbian propagandist, understand
that I am posting these articles for information only, for the purposes
of further discussion, that I do not necessarily agree with the points
of view in the articles, and that I find a number of them irrelevant to
the discussion of Orthodoxy, Orthodoxy culture or the furtherance of the
Orthodox religion, especially in terms of the perceived need for the
promotion of nationalism.

Russia Eats The Kosovo Cake

By Tim Marshall, Sky News

The far away country ends up sending in its army to ensure that only the
state can operate armed groups, and to restore what are without question its
legally recognised borders. But a great power decides that the force used by
the far away country is unacceptable. It begins to bomb the country, not
just in the breakaway region but in its capital and other major urban areas.
The great power forces the far away country out of part of its own
territory, allowing the separatists a victory they could not have otherwise
achieved. This could be a description of the last week's fighting in Georgia
but it is also what happened in 1999 in Serbia.

"Outside View: Kosovo spark, Ossetia fire, UPI

It is obvious that the current conflict in Georgia has been greatly
influenced by the United States' and the European Union's decision to
initiate, support and recognize Kosovo's independence. Over the last few
days this connection has been made in newspapers from Spain to China.
Prominent European statesmen such as Lech Walesa and Jiri Dienstbier also
have linked the current violence in the Caucasus to the "irresponsible"
decision to recognize Serbia's breakaway province.

Kosovo redux, National Post

On Tuesday, the European Union's Javier Solana called upon Russia to do what
the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) didn't do nine years ago:
Respect another country's territorial integrity. Instead of replying: "We'll
respect Georgia's territorial integrity as much as the Western powers
respected Serbia's territorial integrity in 1999," the Russians responded
politely. According to a news agency report, President Dmitry Medvedev "in a
telephone conversation confirmed to Mr. Solana he has given the order to
stop military operations."

Georgia: Comparing Kosovo and South Ossetia, The Telegraph

It was six months ago this week that Kosovo finally declared independence
from Serbia, and worriers fretted that the move could prompt so-called
"frozen conflicts" in Georgia and Trans-Dniester to thaw: emerging like some
long buried monsters from the Arctic tundra in a Hollywood movie.

Krajina, Not Kosovo: Ossetia as botched Balkans replay

By Nebojsa Malic, antiwar.com

Six days ago, as most of the world was watching the opening ceremonies of
the Olympics in Beijing, Georgian troops attacked the self-proclaimed
Republic of South Ossetia. Russia quickly intervened, ousting Georgian
forces from the region and attacking Georgian military bases. Despite the
training and weapons supplied by the U.S. and Israel, the Georgian military
quickly collapsed. President Mikheil Saakashvili, installed in power in 2003
by a CIA-sponsored "Rose Revolution," pleaded for help from his patrons,
painting himself and his country as victims of "Russian aggression." Aside
from empty words of encouragement and hypocritical condemnation of Russian
"excessive force," the Empire had no help to give.
