You Need to Make Sure that Your Child Can Speak Spanish"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, Jul 09, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE)
-- At a town hall meeting in Georgia this morning, presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama told an audience that, "you need to make sure that your child can speak Spanish." Speaking in Powder Springs, Ga., the Illinois Senator said that the nation's chief priority should not be for immigrants to learn English, but for American children to learn Spanish.

I suppose it eventually had to be, but I actually agree with Obama on
this issue. Languages offer power to those that know as many as
possible. I do not understand why, like most other countries in the
world, our children are not only offered but required multiples
languages beginning in preschool. But instead we are stuck with a
federally mandated, but severely underfunded program known as: No
Child Left Behind which wastes a month solely on testing instead of
educating children. It leaves waiting, those children that are
proficient in the material, to serve those that are lagging behind.
Middle schools are notorious holding cells. The program channels
funds from the talented and gifted pool to those that don't much care
about their education. Couple that with the fact that many children
in the school are not legally in the U.S., but drawing from school
funds. One example is that my neice was unable to be placed in a
special education class because it was full. That's right, a child
with catastrophic medical issues was not placed in her appropriate
class because it was full. It seems that not knowing English qualifies
you as special needs in some schools, so that children actually
needing special education teachers sit waiting for placement but with
children her own age but well beyond her capabilities in a regular ed
classroom. Welcome to socialism at it's finest. Thank you Billary
and Bush, though Hillary admits that the program needs to be pulled
because it is a complete failure.
How much better to spend that money on giving our children the power
to communicate with the rest of the world in their language over
demanding they hold the power knowing ours.
Of note, this is in Cobb County, the very county that required
disclaimers on science books regarding evolution. We have since
pulled out youngest out of the public schools.....and she is learning
various languages and not yet in high school. Hmmm. |

Obama should also have stated that American children need to be taught
what the Mexican flag looks like so that they can find the federal
post office in their neighborhood.
I just got a photo in the mail today of illegal aliens, attending
public school at state expense in California, taking down the American
flag at their school and putting up a Mexican one, over the now upside
down Old Glory.
It is an invasion, plain and simple, and anyone who proposes to pander
to these people is nothing more than a traitor.

I presume you are referring to that on protest where the group of
youngsters took down the American flag an raised the Mexican. You know,
our own youth have trouble reciting the oath of allegiance or national
anthem. But then, what should we expect with a half rate education
system that focuses on testing rather than understanding.
Oh, and BTW, education is funded by taxes that those people pay. IF
they own, rent or buy stuff, they are paying taxes.

I work with people who were born in Vietnam and moved to the USA, they
know how to speak english.
I have worked with a person who was born in Kenya and moved to the USA,
she knows how to speak english.
I know several people who were born in Palestine and moved to the USA,
they know how to speak english.
Why the fuck should people from Mexico not follow the same example? They
should learn english, just like the other immigrants. If they can't be
bothered to learn our language, I sure as hell won't learn theirs. |

Illegal mexicans are an invading army, that threaten our way of life. All
Mexicans need to be arrested, and held at Gitmo until they are placed on

I know people from england that speak French. I know people from Canada
that speak French, I know people from Spain that speak Italian,
Portuguese and English. The point is, when an American goes abroad,
they usually do little to learn the host country language since English
should just be expected. I personally feel no fear since I took Spanish
years ago and had to speak it on my mission and most recently when I
worked in restaurants.
Seriously, ask any restaurant manager or construction site super how
important it is to know Spanish. Many of those workers take the free
lessons to learn English when they can find them, but they seem to be
pretty rare.

No one from Korea visits US restaurants? Rather, the restaurant manager
thinks Spanish is important because the kitchen help speak spanish,
because they refuse to learn english. Sort of proves my point, thanks...
What if someone ran a Chineese restaurant, would they still be speaking
spanish? |

I'm talking about the arrogance of American's that expect everyone in
the world to speak English. America is made up of many different types
of people. It is one of the things that makes us unique. While English
is the most prevalent, and it would be helpful for people living here to
learn it, it certainly is not required nor should it be.

It proves nothing other than immigrant labor tends to work the menial
jobs we educated American's don't want. We have low unemployment in
this country. If someone wants to work in the US there is a job,
however they may not be able to make a living wage or they may need to
do something they would rather not do, like buss tables. Kitchens in
American are full of Hispanics because they are the only ones who want
to do it.
| Quote: | What if someone ran a Chineese restaurant, would they still be speaking spanish?

Yes. Same goes for any other ethnic restaurant you can think up. Most
kitchen workers are Hispanic.

You must live up north. Here in Texas, it is uncommon to see a white person
in the kitchen unless they are the manager.
|
??? Chineese people are whites? When the hell did this happen?!?!? I
haven't seen an affirmative action "self declaration" sheet in a number of
years, but last time I knew there was an "asian" choice. Do the Japanese
fall under this too, or only Chineese?

And Lebanese food is from China? Feel-good liberalism has even fucked up

been to has Chineese kitchen help, not hispanic. I have not been to a
Lebanese place, so I cannot comment on that.
I have, however, forgotten the point I was trying to make... |

Quite possibly, but it's spoken here now, yes? Most people in the USA
speak english, yes? So rather then bend over backwards to kiss the ass of
the speakers of other languages, why not encourage them to learn the
majority language? If you don't want to pick english as the "standard",
then pick spanish if you want. Or manderin, or even klingon for all I
care. But once a standard language is picked, that is the language
business operates under, and everyone living here is EXPECTED to learn it. |
